چکیده

The characteristics of athletic shoes have been described with terms like cushioning, stability, and guidance.1,2 Despite many years of effort to optimize athletic shoe construction, the prevalence of running-related lower extremity injuries has not significantly declined; however, athletic performance has reached new heights.3-5 Criteria for optimal athletic shoe construction have been proposed, but no clear consensus has emerged.6-8 Given the unique demands of various sports, sportspecific shoe designs may simultaneously increase performance and decrease injury incidence.9-11 The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of current concepts in athletic shoe design, with emphasis on running shoes, so that athletic trainers and therapists (ATs) can assist their patients in selection of an appropriate shoe design.

The role of shoe design in ankle sprain rates among collegiate basketball players.

CONTEXT Much of the recent focus in shoe design and engineering has been on improving athletic performance. Currently, this improvement has been in the form of "cushioned column systems," which are spring-like in design and located under the heel of the shoe in place of a conventional heel counter. Concerns have been raised about whether this design alteration has increased the incidence of ank...

The Athletic Shoe in Football

BACKGROUND Foot and ankle injuries are common in sports, particularly in cleated athletes. Traditionally, the athletic shoe has not been regarded as a piece of protective equipment but rather as a part of the uniform, with a primary focus on performance and subjective feedback measures of comfort. Changes in turf and shoe design have poorly understood implications on the health and safety of pl...

Determination of Ligament Strain During High Ankle Sprains due to Excessive External Foot Rotation in Sports

High ankle sprains represent a severe injury in sports. External foot rotation is suspected in these cases, but the mechanism of injury remains unclear. The objective of the current study was to integrate in vitro and in vivo experiments along with computational models based on rigid bone surfaces and deformable ligaments of the ankle to investigate the external foot rotation inju...

Clinical uses of in-shoe pressure analysis in podiatric sports medicine.

Athletic injuries of the foot and lower extremity are commonly treated with custom foot orthoses. These devices usually provide immediate relief of the athlete's pain and dysfunction. Occasionally, however, they do not help, or even increase the patient's discomfort. We discuss a method of using in-shoe pressure-measurement systems to analyze the athletic patient's foot and lower-extremity func...
